The biggest SIM mistake is treating connectivity like a small errand you will solve casually after arrival. Uganda trips often become route-sensitive very quickly, so the better move is to decide in advance whether you want a tourist SIM on arrival, a city service-center stop, or no local SIM at all because your travel eSIM already covers the basics.

That choice depends less on price than on friction. If the first night is simple and you need mobile data immediately for transfer, payments, or messaging, airport setup has real value.

A local tourist SIM is still the most straightforward Uganda choice for many visitors because it is simple, replaceable, and easier to troubleshoot on the ground. It also suits travelers whose phones do not support eSIM cleanly or who want a dedicated local number for the duration of the trip.

eSIM is useful when the device supports it and the setup path is clear, but it should be treated as an operator-specific product rather than a universal travel promise. In practice, many travelers still keep a physical-SIM fallback in mind.

A city-first view of mobile service can mislead Uganda travelers. What matters is whether your route is mostly Entebbe and Kampala, a western circuit with Fort Portal and Kasese links, or a southwest gorilla-heavy trip where patchiness matters more.

That means the right network is often the one that behaves acceptably across the route you actually have, not the one that looked strongest in one urban moment.
