Entebbe to Bwindi Guide

For many first-time travelers, Entebbe to Bwindi is the real moment when Uganda stops being abstract. Once this leg is set, the rest of the route usually becomes easier to judge.

That is because the approach into Bwindi influences the permit day, lodge nights, fatigue, and whether the southwest feels rewarding or simply far away.

Uganda Wildlife Authority books gorilla permits by date and entry point. Bwindi’s four tracking sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo; UWA calls Rushaga and Nkuringo the southern sectors, and Buhoma, the park headquarters, is reached from the northern side. The sector on the permit, not the park name, decides the airstrip, the road and the lodge.

Changing sector later is a formal reschedule: UWA wants the request at least 14 days before tracking, accepts it only if space exists, and does not allow low-season permits for April, May and November to be rescheduled at all.

Plan to arrive the day before. UWA’s own access advice has travelers reach the lodge “in time for the next day’s trek”, and tracking starts at 8:00 after permit validation and a briefing at the sector reception.

Overland works when the trip genuinely accepts a major road commitment and uses the intervening nights well. Fly-in works when the transfer would otherwise dominate too much of the route. Extra staging works when the trip wants the southwest to feel calmer and less brittle.

None of these options is inherently more sophisticated. The right one is the one that protects the gorilla day and the overall mood of the trip.

UWA and AeroLink’s 2026 timetable pair Kisoro with the southern sectors and Kihihi with the northern side. Every scheduled rotation leaves from Entebbe International Airport, and both airstrips are followed by a 4WD transfer on winding murram roads. For Ruhija, confirm the airstrip and transfer with your operator.

Kisoro is flown only early morning and midmorning. In March, April, May and November only the 07:00 rotation from Entebbe operates. AeroLink allows 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags, and its terms give no refund within four days of travel.

UWA describes the Kampala–Ntungamo–Rukungiri–Kihihi road as the quickest and most direct route to Buhoma. The alternative via Kabale and Kanungu ends with about 120 km of winding murram road. For Rushaga and Nkuringo, many travelers overnight in Kisoro, about 80 km beyond Kabale, and drive in the next morning. UWA recommends a 4WD on these approaches.

The UK travel advice is to avoid travelling outside main towns after dark, apart from the Kampala–Entebbe airport roads. Build road days that finish in daylight, especially on the murram sections.

Bwindi and Mgahinga are in Uganda’s far south-west, near the DRC and Rwanda borders. The UK FCDO advice, last updated 2 September 2026, notes that security staff routinely accompany gorilla-tracking groups there, tells travelers to avoid gorilla tours that cross into the DRC, and advises against all travel to the DRC provinces bordering Uganda, including Virunga National Park.

Permit date and sector, traveler stamina, budget, and what else the trip wants to carry all matter. The cleaner the answer to those questions is, the cleaner the Entebbe-Bwindi route choice becomes.
