Gorilla Permit Cost in Uganda

Current public Uganda gorilla permit prices, what the permit includes, and how permit cost should fit the wider route decision.

UWA’s February 2026 notice introduces April, May and November gorilla permits at USD 600 for foreign non-residents and USD 500 for foreign residents. It also confirms standard rates from 1 January 2027 of USD 800, USD 700, USD 500 for Rest of Africa citizens, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. The price matters, but the more important question is whether the permit fits the route you are actually building.

What the current public tariff says

The July 2024–June 2026 sheet listed the standard gorilla permit at USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, USD 500 for Rest of Africa citizens and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. The newer signed notice retains these standard rates from 1 January 2027. For a 2026 booking, confirm the applicable rate and category with UWA or your licensed operator; do not treat the expired sheet as a current quotation.

The April, May and November discount applies immediately and discounted permits cannot be rescheduled. The separate gorilla habituation experience has higher rates; revised habituation rates begin on 1 January 2027. Since 1 March 2026, operators must pay in full to secure permits: the previous seven-day unpaid reservation window is suspended.

What the permit includes and what it does not solve

The public tariff states that the permit includes the guide fee, park entrance for the day, and a community development contribution. That is useful because it keeps the permit from being mistaken for only the hour with the gorillas.

At the same time, the permit does not solve the wider route problem for you. Access, staging, sector fit, and the nights around the trek still matter just as much as the tariff itself.

How to use the cost correctly in planning

A gorilla permit is expensive enough that the rest of the itinerary should protect it. Let the permit price encourage a simpler, better-connected route instead of squeezing in every possible stop.

  • Let the permit anchor the route rather than decorate it.
  • Treat the day before the trek as part of the permit-protection plan.
  • Do not compare permit cost in isolation from access and staging costs.
