For most travelers, the airport transfer is not just a transport question. It is the handoff between the airport, the first bed, the first cash or SIM decisions, and the tone of the next morning.

That is why the cleanest first transfer is usually the one that protects the rest of the route rather than the one that wins a small negotiation on arrival.

When a pre-arranged pickup is clearly better

If you are landing late, carrying long-haul fatigue, moving with family, or beginning an itinerary that matters the next morning, a pre-arranged pickup is almost always the better decision. It removes one more judgment call from the weakest moment of the trip.

Even travelers who are comfortable improvising elsewhere often benefit from making day one boring and controlled.

Taking a taxi on arrival

If you do take a taxi from the airport, the Civil Aviation Authority’s advice is to use the official airport taxis: cars with a yellow band and “AIRPORT TAXI” written on them, each with an identification number. Note that number when you hire one. These cars park at the arrivals (ground) level, and car-hire desks also operate at the airport.

App rides are another option, and Bolt lists airport trips on its Kampala page. They need working mobile data at the moment you land, so on a late arrival a pre-booked pickup or an official airport taxi is simpler than setting up a SIM first.

  • For a pre-arranged pickup, agree the driver’s name, the meeting point and whether airport parking and expressway tolls are in the price.
  • Carry some Uganda shillings: the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway tolls do not take foreign bank cards.

Airport to Entebbe versus airport to Kampala

The right airport transfer depends on the first night. If the first bed is in Entebbe, the transfer is mostly about settling quickly. If the first bed is in Kampala, the transfer becomes part of a bigger pacing decision because traffic and arrival fatigue now matter more.

That means the taxi question and the first-night question should be solved together.

Going back to the airport

The departure process the Civil Aviation Authority publishes starts before the terminal: at the airport entrance the driver and occupants are screened and the vehicle is inspected, then cars go to the public car park. Leave time for that checkpoint as well as the Kampala traffic and expressway toll queue.
