Entebbe vs Kampala for the First Night

How to decide whether the first night should absorb the arrival near the airport or move straight into Kampala.

For many Uganda trips, the smartest first night is not the most exciting one. Entebbe usually wins when the goal is lower friction. Kampala wins only when the city itself adds value strong enough to justify the extra movement on day one.

Why Entebbe is the default winner

Entebbe usually wins the first-night argument because it absorbs the airport, fatigue, SIM setup, small money decisions, and the emotional reset after a long-haul arrival. It keeps the trip from asking too much too early.

That is especially true for first-time travelers, wildlife-heavy routes, and anyone who wants the trip to start controlled rather than performative.

When Kampala actually deserves the first night

Kampala deserves the first night only when Kampala itself matters: business meetings, family logistics, a clear urban chapter, or a traveler who genuinely wants the city as part of the story rather than as a rushed transit decision.

If the city is not the point, it is often cleaner to meet it later in the trip or skip it entirely.

  • Choose Kampala when you need the city, not when you just feel guilty about bypassing it.
  • Choose Entebbe when the route starts early the next day.

What the first evening has to handle

Landing at Entebbe puts several errands into the first hours. MTN offers its Tourist SIM at its airport service centre on arrival, against your passport and visa. Banks and bureaux de change operate on the arrivals level, and the Civil Aviation Authority advises keeping the official receipt for any currency you buy. Official airport taxis are yellow-band cars marked “AIRPORT TAXI” with an identification number.

An Entebbe first night keeps those errands short. A Kampala first night adds the expressway, with tolls paid in Uganda shillings, a prepaid Upesi card or, in lanes 4 and 5, MTN Mobile Money, and then city traffic at the far end.

Late arrivals

The UK travel advice to avoid travelling outside main towns after dark makes an exception for the roads between Kampala and Entebbe International Airport. For a late landing, the deciding factors are fatigue, traffic at the Kampala end and whether the pickup is already arranged, not the airport road itself.

The last night before the flight

The same logic runs in reverse. Departure starts with a security check at the airport entrance, where the driver and occupants are screened and the vehicle inspected, so a Kampala last night needs margin for traffic, tolls and that checkpoint.

If the flight falls on the last Saturday of the month, movement is restricted from 7 to 10 am for the national cleaning day. For the August 2026 date, police exempted people travelling abroad or returning from airports who carried travel documents; keep your ticket to hand and confirm the pickup time with your driver.

How this decision changes the whole route

The first-night choice influences more than sleep. It changes when you handle cash, connectivity, driver coordination, traffic exposure, and how quickly the trip can settle into its real Uganda rhythm.

That is why a conservative first night is often the most ambitious long-term move.
